The Terjemahan Lama (TL), also known as the Indonesian Bible, is a translation of the Bible in the Indonesian language. It was published in 1958 by the Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia (LAI) and was widely used until it was replaced by the Terjemahan Baru in 1974. It should be noted that TL is not the oldest or most original translation in the Indonesian language, as there were already several other translations in Malay/Indonesian prior to its publication.
The Bible, commonly referred to as the holy book of Christians, is a collection of 66 books officially recognized by Christians as divinely inspired by God. Although it is often printed as a single volume, it is important to note that the term "Injil" is sometimes used to refer to the sacred scriptures of Christians. However, this is incorrect, as the term "Injil" only refers to the first four books in the New Testament, not the entire collection of 66 books.
The term "Alkitab" is derived from the Arabic words "Al" and "Kitab," which literally mean "that book" or "that scripture." The word "Al" is a typical article in the Arabic language. In the Christian holy scriptures themselves, the term "Alkitab" (derived from Arabic) is not used, as the Holy Scriptures of Christianity are translated into Indonesian from their original languages, namely Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
